Education in the Methodology Field of Health Care - EuroMISE Introduction

1. The goal of the JEP

The programme was designed to introduce the methodology disciplines of health care, i.e. medical informatics, statistics and epidemiology to the Czech Republic and other Central and Eastern European countries. The programme was developed in cooperation of Charles University First Faculty of Medicine, Third Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Kralove, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, General Faculty hospital in Prague and Academy of Sciences - Institute of Computer Science with 11 EU universities and institutes. The main targets of the programme were to create curricula and courses for European education in Medical Informatics, Statistics and Epidemiology (EuroMISE), i.e.:

  • to analyse existing curricula for medical informatics, statistics and epidemiology in order to introduce European dimension into medical and health professional education,
  • to support Charles University to introduce and improve its structural capacities in higher education and establish the EuroMISE higher education centre with modern teaching laboratory for EuroMISE courses in the field of medical informatics, statistics and epidemiology,
  • to develop modular structure of the EuroMISE courses, teaching materials and tools in English,
  • to teach teachers to multiply the knowledge in the Czech Republic, Central and Eastern European countries,
  • to organize retraining-updating stays of Czech university teachers in EU universities and language courses,
  • to run EuroMISE courses for Czech, Central and Eastern European countries participants and prepare the evaluation of the courses,
  • to organize workshops and conferences for teaching materials and structure of the EuroMISE courses development and for transfer of knowledge.

2. Real outputs

Existing curricula for medical informatics, statistics and epidemiology were analysed and used to prepare the curriculum for postgraduate education in this field. The modular structure of EuroMISE courses was developed, teaching materials and tools were created and language preparation was organised.

EuroMISE courses were running in 1994-5. There were 11 EuroMISE courses (length one week, language English) and 4 courses (length one week, language Czech) for applications in oncology, in data analysis and for doctoral studies of physicians. There were two EuroMISE courses (lenght one month, language English) for Czech participants as well as participants from Central and Eastern European Countries. The participants of courses in English language ended the course with the written final theses and received the certificate. More than 60 participants from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Romania successfully completed the EuroMISE courses given in English and more than 40 participants successfully completed EuroMISE course given in Czech language by Czech EuroMISE teachers (participated in EuroMISE courses given by EU university teachers).

The EuroMISE Centre with modern teaching computer laboratory was established in 1994 and in structure of the Charles University belongs under the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. During the project 39 retraining-updating stays of Czech teachers at EU universities were organised.

During the project 6 workshops and 2 conferences were organised. The main topic of the EuroMISE Conference held in Harrachov in 1994 was Medical Informatics Education and Research. The main topic of the EuroMISE Conference held in Prague in 1995 was Information, Health and Education.

3. Results to offer

EuroMISE Center is ready to pass the information on EuroMISE courses to the institutions interested in the Czech Republic, to share know-how of teaching technologies in this field and make available EuroMISE conferences materials. Further we can offer the participation in the EuroMISE courses running in the next years. We can help using our knowledge and experience to form a tailor made modular EuroMISE course in co-operation with interested institutions.
