the Institute for Clinical & Experimental Medicine (IKEM)

In December 2004 the European Center for Medical Informatics, Statistics & Epidemiology (EuroMISE Center) joined officially in a Research Cooperation Act with the Institute for Clinical & Experimental Medicine (IKEM) in the field of atherosclerosis research. In studying the risk factors for ischemic heart disease and cardiovascular disease and their development in the Czech population, IKEM may boast a longstanding research tradition. It is primarily based on the institute’s research involvement in a multinational study MONICA (MONItoring trends and determinants of CArdiovascular disease), at which the Czech Republic participates through IKEM since 1985. Cardiovascular research program is part of a scientific portfolio of the EuroMISE Center ever since the year 2000, which is further signified by the then center’s designation EuroMISE Center – Cardio. Under the EuroMISE Center framework the risk factors for atherosclerosis are being monitored in the populations of patients cared for by the staff of cardiologic ambulances located in the building of the Institute of Computer Science of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague 8 and in the Municipal Hospital in Čáslav. Secondary prevention of coronary heart disease represents yet another research interest common to both scientific institutions, while EuroMISE center’s know-how entering the research cooperation stems from interconnecting several scientific disciplines - preventive cardiology, medical statistics and medical informatics – under the umbrella of interdisciplinary research.
