Research Projects in Medical Informatics Unit, University
of Cambridge

On November 5th, 2001 a workshop Research Projects in Medical Informatics Unit, University of Cambridge, was held. Prof. R. Hanka, the director of Medical Informatics Unit, University of Cambridge in Great Britain, was the main lecturer.

Three research projects solving in MIU (Medical Information Unit) in Cambridge were described. These projects are:

  • - Telemedicine
  • - Knowledge Management
  • - Document classification

In the field of telemedicine MIU cooperates with Ministry of Defence in London. Their common research project is focused on automatic processing and annotation of histopathologic specimen. Even though this work is ranked as “secret”, some details of the project were discussed and there was a demonstration of a current version of developed software.

Knowledge management becomes more important in all professional fields and mostly in medicine. Physicians are overloaded by quickly developing and changing information from pharmaceutical companies, by treatment guidelines from Ministry of Health and by other relevant (not in all cases) information from other sources. MIU has been working in this field for many years and it has developed a unique approach to organizing, processing and retrieving professional information. Methodology and architecture of developed software were presented during the lecture.

Document classification is an inseparable part of each trial to organize knowledge in the written form, stored in a computer.

Ing. Karel Fuka, a PhD student, who works in this field, discussed some aspects of his work and showed so far reached practical results.
